Residential Architecture

Desert Modern

ETXEA

Set within a rugged Sonoran Desert landscape, this contemporary residence is shaped by its extraordinary site. Rather than imposing a singular form on the terrain, the architecture unfolds among existing rock formations, mature saguaros, and dramatic changes in elevation, creating an intimate connection between the home and its surroundings.

A composition of low horizontal volumes, varied roof planes, exposed structural steel, and expansive glass responds to the scale of the desert while framing both distant mountain views and close-up encounters with the natural rock outcroppings. At the rear, a broad sheltered outdoor living area extends the architecture into the landscape, overlooking a linear pool and raised spa nestled between the surrounding boulders.

Inside, the open great room, dining area, and kitchen are unified by a warm wood ceiling and bold exposed steel structure. A dramatic book-matched fireplace anchors the great room, its mirrored veining creating a striking focal point while floor-to-ceiling windows connect the interior to the surrounding desert.

Throughout the home, architectural details become moments of discovery. A glass-enclosed wine room forms a sculptural feature along a curved gallery, while carefully positioned windows transform desert and mountain views into living artwork.

From its arrival sequence to its protected outdoor rooms, the residence balances strong contemporary geometry with the irregular beauty of the site, allowing architecture, rock, vegetation, light, and expansive desert views to define the experience of the home.
